Hidden Gems: The Best Scenic Drives Around Apremont

While many visitors flock to the Atlantic coast, the real magic of the Vendée lies just inland. Apremont is perfectly positioned as a gateway to the authentic Bocage Vendéen — rolling hills, ancient river valleys, and hidden lakes that feel a world away from the busy seaside resorts.

There is something special about the Vendée. While many visitors flock straight to the Atlantic coast, those of us who live here know that the real magic lies just a few kilometres inland. Apremont is perfectly positioned as a gateway to the authentic "Bocage Vendéen" — a landscape of rolling hills, ancient river valleys, and hidden lakes that feel a world away from the busy seaside resorts.

If you are looking to explore the region at a slower pace, here are six of my favourite "hidden gem" routes that start right from our doorstep in Apremont.

1. The River Vie Valley Route (Apremont to Coëx)

This is a short but incredibly peaceful drive that follows the winding path of the River Vie. Instead of taking the main roads, follow the smaller country lanes towards Coëx.

  • Why you’ll love it: You’ll pass through lush, verdant valleys. Keep an eye out for the historic watermills and traditional stone bridges.
  • Don’t miss: A quick stop at the Lac du Gué Gorand near Coëx for a quiet picnic by the water.

2. The Castle & Lake Loop

Apremont is a "Petite Cité de Caractère." This route takes you from the heights of Apremont Castle, through the lush forest of Aizenay, and loops back around the spectacular Lac d’Apremont.

  • Why you’ll love it: The view from the castle terrace over the lake is arguably the best in the department.
  • Pro Tip: Head towards Commequiers to see the ruins of the 15th-century feudal castle — it’s an astonishing sight, standing like a stone guardian in the middle of the fields.

3. The "Artisan & Nature" Trail

Head towards Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche, a haven for artists and craftsmen. The roads are lined with traditional bocage hedges and ancient oak trees.

  • Why you’ll love it: It’s a sensory experience. The combination of quiet, tree-lined roads and the charming, flower-filled village centre makes it a favourite for a lazy Sunday afternoon drive.
  • The Reward: Walk the streets of Beaulieu — it is perfect for finding a unique souvenir or enjoying a coffee in the square.

4. The Marais Poitevin "Green Venice" Expedition

If you are willing to drive a little further south, the Marais Poitevin is a must-see. This is a vast network of canals and marshland that creates a unique ecosystem.

  • Why you’ll love it: Known as "La Venise Verte" (Green Venice), this area is best explored by boat, but the drive through the surrounding flatlands and traditional canal-side villages is mesmerising.
  • Pro Tip: Park in Coulon, the heart of the marsh, and take a traditional flat-bottomed boat tour through the shaded waterways. The canopy of trees creates a magical, ethereal light that you won’t find anywhere else in France.

5. The Atlantic Panorama (The Corniche Vendéenne)

Sometimes, you just need the salt air. While we are inland, a short drive towards Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez brings you to the Corniche Vendéenne.

  • Why you’ll love it: This is a dramatic stretch of rocky coastline where the waves crash against the cliffs. It is a sharp contrast to the sandy beaches of the south and offers some of the most spectacular sunsets in the region.
  • The Reward: Stop at the "Trou du Diable" (The Devil’s Hole), a natural rock formation where the sea surges through with incredible force.

6. The Forest & Heritage Run (Forêt de Grasla)

For a drive that combines deep forest paths with a touch of history, head toward the Forêt de Grasla.

  • Why you’ll love it: The forest roads here are narrow, shaded, and incredibly quiet. It is the perfect place to disconnect from the modern world and enjoy the sounds of nature.
  • Don’t Miss: The Logis de la Chabotterie. This historic site is famous for its beautiful gardens and its connection to the Vendée Wars. Even if you don’t go inside, the drive through the countryside to get there takes you past traditional farms and beautiful, manicured hedges.

Whether you are just passing through or looking for a base to explore these hidden gems year-round, there is no better way to experience the Vendée than by making it your second home.
